Again, not the most beautiful thing, but a technical success none the less! Turns out to get SOP attributes to transfer into your FLIP simulation you need to import the source as a particle field! Maybe tomorrow I'll figure out the last little part which would be having the object hang in the air and only the bottom of it melt. Either way this two day R&D effort has definitely deepened my knowledge of FLIP sims and DOP networks, so even though visually they've been pretty meh I'd still rank them a great success!
